remembering

No art today, I am remembering that seven years ago the sky was as blue as it is today, and that I kept thinking all day, "how can it be so beautiful when such a terrible thing has happened?"

I guess that defines heartbreakingly beautiful. In my journal today I wrote seven years ago the world changed. The world changes every day, of course, but everyone who was alive and old enough to be aware knows that things really did change that day.

My heart is with all of the people who died that day, and their families. Also with the families of all the soldiers and civilians who have died since then in the "war on terror". Yesterday my son told me that one of the kids who was a neighbor of ours years ago was killed last week in Afghanistan. He was a Marine. My heart is especially with his mother and the rest of his family.

It is time to change in a big way. October 4 is the last day to register to vote in Washington state in time for this year's presidential election. If you aren't registered, or you know someone who isn't, DO IT!!

peace to all of us,

Sketching and doodling...

From time to time I get the urge to draw, or sketch, and I carry a sketching journal with me. While we were at the family reunion in August, I captured a couple of my nephews during the family story-telling time. This is Jim, he is about 20. He is extremely well-spoken and thoughtful, as the pose might indicate.
This is Michael, the 12 year old son of my nephew, Todd. He was so still while I was sketching him that I thought for sure he was posing for me, but he told me later that he didn't know I was drawing him! I used caran d'ache and a water pen to add color to these.
Quick sketches of our wonderful dog, Nell, during naps. I was really glad that I could do these, as she was not still for very long...
Finally a page of doodles. I loved drawing freely from my imagination in Theo Ellsworth's class at ArtFest earlier this year, but haven't let myself do it much since. This was fun. I blocked off some journaling which included too many names.

I have been finding a lot of sketching on other people's blogs lately, and thought I would share some of my recent work. I would like to draw every day, it isn't that hard, and I enjoy it. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the portrait sketches were reasonable likenesses, I want to do more sketches of people. I love the faces that Danny Gregory draws.

I am purchasing a new toy for Halloween!

Etsy :: tarasartcamp :: Pumpkin Girl, Stuffie, Softie

I have just purchased this wonderful, delightful, doll from one of my favorite outsider artists, Tara Ross! I love Halloween, and couldn't resist this doll! Check her out at http://tararossstudios.blogspot.com/, and check out her etsy, too!

The seasons have done an abrupt switch here in the Northwest, and I am thinking about Halloween, and fires in the fireplace, and baking bread and making soups.

I need to learn how to do a few basic things on my blog, too, like how to do a link to someone's website without having to put in the whole address... Enjoy Tara's work, though!
